What Is Microsuction Ear Wax Removal?
Microsuction ear wax removal is a treatment where our Otology Registered Nurse, Denise, removes ear wax using a small suction device while looking into the ear. She views the ear through a large surgical microscope to give her a very large clear view of your ear canal.
If you have earwax build-up, it is important to clear it as soon as possible. If not, it may eventually lead to a more serious condition such as an ear infection. For those with dementia, the inability to hear can lead to behavioral issues and worsen cognitive decline.
Microsuction earwax removal is the most commonly performed and safe type of earwax removal.
What Are the Benefits of Microsuction?
This treatment is safe and pain-free for you. It is more comfortable than ear syringing as there is no water being pushed into your ear.
The old ear syringing method is regarded as not being good practice now as it can lead to complications.
Microsuction can be used even if you have a ruptured ear drum, have had ear surgery, or ear infections. If you have an ear infection it can be helpful to have microsuction before you use ear drops so that the drops are spread around the canal and ear drum.
How Does Microsuction Work?
Before your visit, we’ll discuss your ear history and detail microsuction. Denise will address your questions.
You’ll rest on a bed as Denise introduces you to the process and uses a microscope and microsuction device to gently remove ear wax and debris, avoiding the ear drum and canal. She identifies ear issues, possibly taking swabs for infections, and advises on ear care.
Throughout, she informs you about the process and aftercare. If any concerns arise, Denise will ensure your GP receives a detailed report and, if necessary, refer you to an Otolaryngology (ENT) specialist for further care.
